Designing for Integrated Technology in the Workplace

When it comes to hybrid work, the workplace is no longer limited to one location. And, there is no longer a single space within the office dedicated to connection technology. The previous “videoconference room” has become obsolete, as we shift to immersive technology in the workplace—with integrated access and support across all the places people work.

Technology already had to work hard 10 years ago, but now, the expectation is that its use needs to be a seamless and intuitive experience for everyone, everywhere. We have to think about acoustics, visuals—and how technology tools support individuals doing activities in the office, as well as their colleagues working from another location.

The Digital Workstream

For hybrid  high-performing teams, it’s vital that the right communication technology and tools are available for solving the unique challenges they may be facing. Technologies include cloud-based storage systems, digital whiteboards, personal devices, and unified communications tools. Digital workstream collaborative tools offer support for teams’ needs in each of these areas and more.

Platforms like Haworth’s Bluescape, Slack, and Microsoft Teams each provide a common space for employees to collaborate—virtually. They assist in coordinating activities, responsibilities, and group access, as well as managing timelines and defining when and where work gets completed in an equitable manner for all. When teams use these types of tools, it leads to greater productivity, as they can work more efficiently.

At Haworth, we often work with organizations as they redesign or develop new workspaces—from local community colleges to global headquarters. Here are several project examples where the space design supported people and their activities through added technology in the workplace. 


Honeywell International

Technology Manufacturer
Charlotte, NC

The Honeywell International headquarters building creates a living laboratory that provides space to showcase and test its many smart building technologies. The Customer Experience Center invites guests and employees to see some of the company’s innovations come to life. Here, a meeting room with a customized 360° video and sound system immerses visitors in a complete high-tech experience that reinforces Honeywell’s capabilities as a leader in technology.

Throughout the office—and beyond—seamless communication and videoconferencing technology supports productivity and enhances collaboration for on-site team members, as well as those working in other locations.


American Water

Utility Company
Camden, New Jersey

In terms of the working environment, American Water employees communicated that they craved openness, ease of collaboration, and more non-traditional workspaces. To offer flexibility and variety in settings that support the ways people choose to work, recharge, and network, American Water added comfortable social spaces throughout the building. Two Wi-Fi enabled terraces with lounge furnishings were also added, providing open-air workspaces and gathering spots. And of course, everyone is welcome to enjoy the on-campus riverfront park, where people can hold walking meetings, gather for lunch conversations, or just relax and recharge.


Western Michigan University – College of Aviation

The College of Aviation at WMU is the third-largest aviation training program in the country, residing in West Michigan at the Battle Creek Executive Airport’s Kellogg Field. Classroom design throughout the location provides the support and proper applications needed for the specialty technology used in aviation training. A lab—built for six simulators and an observation platform—prepares pilots before they fly maneuvers outside. 


Warner Norcross + Judd

Law Firm
Grand Rapids, Michigan

Conference rooms are equipped with Wi-Fi, as well as the latest connectivity and video conferencing technology, making it feel like clients and employees working from anywhere off-site are actually in the room during meetings. Adjustable chairs and tables enabled with power make the spaces both comfortable and efficient. At a moment’s notice, they’re ready for virtual meetings, interviews, training, and more—all via video. A reservation system developed by Warner’s IT team makes reserving each room easy, while an iPad outside each room displays the booking schedule.

At Haworth headquarters, we’ve given special attention to upgrading technology to better facilitate communications and workflow.  

Our conference room technology optimizes meeting experiences with simple-to-use wireless connectivity. The use of workstream collaborative tools helps create an equitable, collaborative experience for teams, allowing for contributions from team members who may otherwise not get the chance to offer their thoughts and ideas. For example, Bluescape technology makes it easy for individuals and teams to create, interact with, and share content in real-time on different devices—resulting in a better flow of ideas, feedback, and collaboration.
